Eden Dance Company

On the 10th December I went to watch the unique and qwirky Eden Dance Company in their piece based on nature. The company was made up of 11 Coventry University dance students and was choreographed by Alex Howard. This site specific work was originally meant to be performed outside however due to weather conditions the dancers did a superb job of altering their dance to be performed half inside and half outside which I thought made it very interesting to watch.

The dancers had already started performing before the audience arrived in the dance space. We were invited to take a journey around the space like a 'nature trail' Various props were around the room such as wellington boots and fur coats which confused the audience but the link to nature was still there. When walking around the room the dancers looked like apart of nature aswell as if they were in their element and we were simply not there. The audience were challenegd right from the start of the piece as they were bought right into the action which was intresting and sometimes slightly uncomfortable for the audience members.

The dancers continued to explore the space and changed dynamics throughout. I was drawn to the intricate movements that each dancer portrayed and the different timings of each dancers score. As the dance progrssed it was quite clear to the audience that the dancers actually used the same score but different timings which worked out beautifully as sometime cannon and unison occured throughout the piece.

Halfway through the piece the dancers but on wellington boots and fur coats and started to walk outside we were asked to follow. The 11 dancers walked through the streets of coventry completely and proffesionaly in character. We ended up in the University square where the dancers explored different areas together. The audience again were challenged as to whether they should follow the dancers or where the should stand at all in the space.

Overall, the piece was very interesting to watch due to the change in locations throughout the piece. I found it very intriguing as both the dancers and audience were challenged to adapt to their surroundings.
